So, in a previous post I noted that law comes up quite a bit in International Security, whether it pertains to international trade, human rights, or even biosecurity. The law pervades every part of our lives, and even here at home some of the cutting edge issues such as drones and internet privacy are being worked out in law courts. To that end, I started reading a book that gives an overview of American law.
In addition to reading the book, I went to the University of Pittsburgh Law School‘s site, initially to have a look at their Law Journal. That led me to looking at the classes for a first year law student and what they read: books, articles, journals, and papers. And cases. Tons of cases.
In some of the classes I looked at, they show the movie Paper Chase, which I had never seen. If you haven’t, take a look at this scene:
Ouch. Pretty intense!
I’ve decided that I’m going to read a little bit on law, both practical law and legal theory. I’m not planning to be a lawyer or anything; I just think that a basic knowledge of law would be helpful. I’ll do an occasional series here on the blog as I do. Hopefully you’ll find these posts interesting!
